Gary and Dr. Eric debate issues as Finley campaign self-destructs

Posted in Campaign News, Endorsements on October 4, 2008 by Mark Vandermaas

This post is a commentary based in part on Jeff Parkinson’s article, ‘Liberals endorse McHale?‘ in which he mused about Liberal candidate Dr. Eric Hoskin’s apparent recognition of Gary’s contributions to Caledonia.

The McHale campaign very much appreciates Dr. Eric’s endorsement of Gary’s contributions to Caledonia, and we would agree that he IS too good for Ottawa – but they’ll just have to get used to him up there.

If Gary was good in Dunnville, you should have seen him tonight at the Cable 14/Hamilton Spectator televised debate! Dr. Eric came on strong in the beginning, but Gary nailed him on the Carbon Tax and especially, on Caledonia when he asked the doctor if there was race-based policing in Caledonia.  When he didn’t answer right away, Gary insisted, “Yes or no, is there race-based policing in Caledonia?” Then he pulled out Toby Barrett’s historic Haldimand Proclamation for Peace, Order and Good Government and asked if Dr. Eric would endorse it. Dr. Eric, unfortunately, highlighted his complete naivety of the Caledonia situation by saying he hadn’t read it! I gave a copy to one of his aides afterwards, so perhaps he’ll have time to read one of the most important documents ever written by a Canadian politician in recent memory before he meets Gary again at the Caledonia debate on Monday night.

Gary shows his ‘stuff’ at debates

Posted in Campaign News on October 3, 2008 by Mark Vandermaas

Gary has now participated in three all-candidates meetings: Delhi, Kohler and last night’s Dunnville debate which PC Diane Finley did not attend. Liberal candidate Dr. Eric Hoskins seemed a little unsure of how to cope with Gary’s hard-earned credibility and no-nonsense style.

Dr. Eric actually told the crowd that Gary was ‘too good’ to send to Ottawa! Naturally, while we appreciate the good doctor’s recognition of Gary’s credentials, his argument that people should vote for him instead of the man who has stood up against injustice in Haldimand for the past two years didn’t seem to make a lot of sense.

The next debate will be televised by Cable 14 from the Hamilton Spectator auditorium at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow. For more details on this and other appearances by Gary, please see the Events Calendar.

Gary in Dunnville

Gary started off Saturday, Sept 27th at the Farmer’s market in Dunnville and met many people who were upset by the continuous party politics put forth by both the PC and Liberals. People want someone to truly represent them in Ottawa and not a person who will forget about them after being elected.

Gary experiences Delhi Harvestfest hospitality

Posted in Campaign News, Campaign Photos on September 26, 2008 by Mark Vandermaas

UPDATED Sept 26/08 w/hi-res photos

On Saturday, September 20th Gary and wife Christine participated in the Delhi Harvestfest parade.

Afterwards, a number of people stopped to talk and ask for signs, including one resident who requested a 4’x4′ version for his property on the main road through town. One of those who spent some time with Gary was Richard Robillard from Generation Zel! Radio. He then posted an endorsement for the McHale campaign and declared that, for the first time in his life, he was not going to vote Conservative.

  • LARGE: 4′ x 4′ hard plastic, to be screwed onto wooden stakes, printed on 2 sides.

Generation Zel! Radio endorses Gary McHale

“So for the first time in my voting career, I will not be voting Conservative. I am not putting a Conservative sign on my lawn.

“I am supporting a candidate who will stand for me, stand for my community, and stand for Haldimand-Norfolk. I am supporting a candidate who will put our issues ahead of the party, because he has no party to be accountable for. Just the electorate. I am supporting Gary McHale.”

McHale campaign update – Sept 16/08

Posted in Campaign News on September 16, 2008 by Mark Vandermaas

The Gary McHale campaign for Haldimand-Norfolk is starting to move down the track…

1. Gary is now allowed to travel to Caledonia

On Friday, Sept 12th the Crown & OPP negotiated an agreement with Gary that allows him to travel to Caledonia and Hagersville for the election campaign, but imposes new restrictions on his right to meet and speak to voters. More details and background can be found in OPP & Ontario Ministry of Attorney General try to stop Gary from being elected.

2. Lawn signs have been ordered

Thanks to the generosity of concerned citizens sufficient funds have been raised to allow us to order a fair number of lawn signs, including some extra large (4’x4′) in size to be used in high traffic locations. They should be available later this week. If you want a sign, send an email with your contact info (name, address, phone #) to Gary at or Mark Vandermaas at
